
In 2023, Caspian Engineering Solutions successfully delivered the rental and full engineering support services for Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) equipment to be utilized at Well No. 1703 of the “Lokbatan–Puta–Gushkhana” field, operated by the Absheron Production Division of SOCAR's Complex Drilling Works Trust.
The primary goal of the project was to ensure the safe and controlled drilling of the well, considering the complex geological and pressure conditions of the area. The selected MPD technology enabled real-time management of downhole pressure, prevented sudden pressure fluctuations, and allowed the drilling operations to proceed in a safer and more efficient manner.
Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) is an advanced drilling technique that allows for the precise and continuous control of wellbore pressure throughout the drilling process. MPD systems are particularly useful in narrow pressure windows, high-risk formations, or areas with abnormal pressure behavior. By dynamically regulating the density and flow parameters of the drilling fluid, MPD minimizes the risk of kicks, losses, and other well control events.
The scope of services provided by Caspian Engineering Solutions included the installation, configuration, field testing, and 24/7 real-time engineering supervision of the MPD equipment. Continuous monitoring and operational control of the system enabled optimized, safe drilling aligned with both international standards and SOCAR’s internal technical specifications.
As a result of this project, the drilling of Well No. 1703 was completed on time, safely, and without incident. The application of MPD significantly reduced the risks posed by subsurface anomalies and contributed to the optimization of overall well costs. The technology proved to be a valuable tool both technically and economically.
